WHAT CAUSED ELECTION COMMISSION OFFICE FIRE
CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Crossville Fire Department has determined the fire that destroyed the building housing the Cumberland County Election Commission was accidental.
The fire broke out last month, prompting a response from dozens of firefighters.
Jill Davis, the administrator of elections in Cumberland County, said after the fire that election supplies, election machines and electronic poll pads worth more than $400,000 had been destroyed.
Crossville Fire Department Chief Chris South told WVLT News on Wednesday there were no signs of anyone breaking in or anything criminal to cause the fire, calling it “definitely accidental.”
He said it stems from an electrical problem or oily rags left in a container that were used for staining. The damage was so extensive, however, that investigators were unable to pinpoint which one caused the fire.
Despite the fire, hard copies of voter registration was unharmed, . Voting for the primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5.
