WARTBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER ASSAULTED AT SCHOOL

WARTBURG, Tenn. (WATE) — A Wartburg Middle School student suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and another student has been captured after what the Morgan County Sheriff’s office described as an “assault” at the school Tuesday afternoon.

The sheriff’s office posted information on social media just before 6:45 p.m. Tuesday that the assault involving the two students happened at approximately 1:10 p.m.

The victim was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Another student who is a suspect in the assault ran from the scene, but was taken into custody after a search that lasted several hours, the sheriff’s office said. The suspect is an 11-year-old girl, according to Ninth Judicial District, District Attorney General Russell Johnson. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday, closed to the media and public.

The suspect was taken to a juvenile detention facility pending completion of the investigation.

“Today Central Middle School experienced a serious incident in which one student assaulted another student. The school is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the incident. At this time there is no continued threat to students or staff. Due to the ongoing investigation no additional details will be released at this time,” Pemberton wrote.

MCSO said because of the cooperation between the sheriff’s office, Morgan County Schools administrators, Morgan County EMA and the Morgan County Correctional Complex Tracking team, students at Wartburg Middle School were dismissed on time.
