WARNING ISSUED FOR ‘FAKE COPS’ PULLING OVER DRIVERS IN KNOXVILLE

There is a warning for drivers after several people claim they were pulled over by what looked like a police car then ambushed.

Reports have been popping up on social media of an SUV with blue lights pulling people over all over the Knoxville area, then men getting out and running toward the car they pulled over. Some claim it was a black SUV, others saying they saw a Chrysler, pulling them over and following them.

“I posted it on a trading website and there was like tons of comments saying, ‘Yes, I’ve heard of this happening’ and ‘Yes, this happened to my friend,’” said Heather Mounce.

Mounce says when she was pulled over Tuesday, three masked men jumped out of the SUV and started running towards her. She sped away.

“All the bad things were going through my mind, all the things that could happen,” she said.

Another woman who spoke anonymously with WATE 6 On Your Side says something similar happened to her more than a week ago. She was followed, and eventually lost them. She saw Mounce’s Facebook post and says it scared her.

“I knew that he had to be after something, especially with the same exact description of the vehicle,” she said.

Police say if you are being pulled over and you are not sure it is by a real officer there are some things you can do to protect yourself.

First, turn on your flashers. That will let the officer know you are aware he’s behind you. Then you can drive to a safe place, and call 911. Tell them what is going on, and they can tell you if that officer is legitimate.

“I was thinking that’ll never happen to me because I’m from a really small town,” said Mounce.

Now they are just hoping to get the word out and keep others safe.

“I’m just glad that nothing serious has happened yet,” said the anonymous woman. “Do not stop.”

Some people are commenting on Facebook that it is a hoax.

WATE 6 On Your Side checked with police, and they say while no one has filed a police report, they are telling officers to be on the lookout for that dark SUV. So far from all the reports we have seen, everyone was able to get away from the men in the SUV.

Call 911 if this happens to you.  (WATE)
