WALGREENS FINED $500,000 FOR OVER-CHARGING CUSTOMERS, MISLEADING ADVERTISING

Walgreens will have to “pay up” for overcharging its customers.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced the drug store will have to pay $500,000 for its misleading advertising.

A recent investigation found the company charged customers more at the register than advertised. It also found the company advertised products as being on sale when they were in fact regular price.

Schneiderman says the store kept last chance and clearance items on store shelves for up to 10 months.

The state’s top prosecutor says the chain “failed to provide consumers with clear and consistent information.”

“Businesses are required to have ads that are truthful and not misleading,” says Schneiderman. “The settlement, announced Thursday, requires Walgreens and Duane Reade to pay a penalty to the state and to reform it’s advertising practices.”

Stores that fail two consecutive follow-up audits will have to pay an additional $2,500 penalty.
