MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The TBI released the name of the man shot by a Blount County deputy Tuesday. The TBI said 28-year-old Robert Lee Pilkey died after an encounter with a Blount County Sheriff’s Deputy in Maryville.

According to officials, the shooting occurred on Wildwood Road near Reservoir Road in 1:45 p.m. One person was reportedly shot during the incident and taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.

BCSO deputies responded to the scene on the report of a suspicious person, according to a release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Upon arrival, a deputy reportedly found a man matching the person’s description armed with a knife. The situation escalated, and the deputy fired shots, reportedly striking the man.
