US NAVY GIVES CROSSVILLE ORDERS TO PAINT CCHS ‘JET’ IN FRONT OF SCHOOL
The city of Crossville has less than 90 days to respond to the Department of the Navy’s call to repair the Cumberland High School jet that is mounted in front of the school.
City Manager Greg Wood said the future of the jet will up for the county school board to decide.
“The requirement is for the school to maintain it,” Wood said. “We need to let the school board know that we have this, and it is their responsibility and ask if they are going to budget for it. If not, then we need to respond to the Navy with come take your plane.”
Wood said the Navy inspected the jet and found discrepancies in the condition required by the loan lease. The paint job seems to be the main issue.
“T-Cat could maybe do it,” Wood said. “Also, I have been looking at some Sherman Williams aircraft paint, because I doubt that it was painted with aircraft paint last time. We want something that will last for 20 years.”
Wood said the school system would have two years to complete repairs after response.

So much money goes to school administrators, the jet is a symbol of the school, they should budget for the 20-year paint job.

Aircraft paint is not necessary in this application since this piece will not be subjected to the environmental conditions of a flight worthy aircraft. Military grade paints are prohibitively expensive however a high quality industrial coating like those offered by Matthews Paint or its competitors will offer a long lasting coating that should be acceptable to the Dept of the Navy. The cost of the paint will be minor relative to the labor required to strip and prepare the aluminum surfaces to accept an acceptable quality coating. Perhaps there are volunteers in local businesses and the alumni that would be willing to donate time and resources.

The CPO Mess from NOSC Knoxville and my kids volunteered to paint the jet in 2013. We used an automotive paint obtained from Napa to spray it. You might contact the Navy Reserve Center in Knoxville to see if they would be interested in helping.

I graduated in 2001…I since went into the Military. Served in Iraq. Now I’m going to school for Collison Repair. I would love love love to paint this Angel. She means the world to me. She is even tattooed on my arm. No kidding. This is amazing. We can’t let them take it back.

Let the vocational school body shop paint it.

This is like painting a car, not a sign. You need a body shop to paint it. It will need sanded, paint, spray paint, etc in a room where dust and dirt etc don’t get in the paint. This is not a cheap or easy project and would need a professional so you don’t get orange peel and runs in your paint. But should last more than 20 yrs if done right with a high quality paint. You can’t just use Sherman Williams paint and expect it to last longer than a deck.

We made a agreement with them and need to honor it. Take some of the money you want to build a rec building and paint the plane. Its been a symbol in our City and county for many many years so honor the agreement.

See what the Navy requires. It’s not like they are ever going to fly this again. Commercial aircraft is painted in large hangers. you will not see a little dust in the paint from ground level. This is not rocket science, it can be an easy task if the right people get picked to do the job. You can make a building like a greenhouse and paint it in place without moving the Jet. Come on people, don’t try to over engineer this, just do what the navy wants and be done with it.

Use some of the $200,000 plus money recieved for covid to fix it. Only fair since some of it was used already supposedly for computers for teachers without it being voted on. There was supposed to been a group voted in to oversee the distribution of those funds.
