TBI says the shooting occurred at the 340 Airport Rd. exit of I-40 westbound. A Roane County deputy clocked a 2003 Hyundai Accent traveling at more than 100 mph on Highway 27 in Harriman. The car entered I-40 westbound and the pursuit continued to the exit ramp at mile marker 340.

The car lost control and spun into a guardrail, coming to a stop. The deputy got out of his car and was standing by his cruiser when the driver of the Hyundai drove forward and rammed his cruiser. That’s when the deputy fired through the windshield, hitting the driver.

The driver of the Hyundai was taken to Roane Medical Center in Harriman and was later transferred to UT Medical Center. A female passenger was also taken to the hospital for injuries unrelated to the shooting.
