Gary Michael Smallwood, 40, attacked the nurses around 6:30 a.m. this morning with scissors and a knife in his Tennova-Physicians Regional Medical Center hospital room, according to the Knoxville Police Department.  He has been charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder.

One male nurse and one female nurse were injured. The female was punctured in the upper chest region, and the male received lacerations from struggling with Smallwood over the knife, according to the KPD.

Officer Adam Parnell and Sgt. Chris Caulpetzer responded to the E-911 call and found the suspect on the second floor of the hospital, where he was being controlled by hospital staff, according to the KPD.

Smallwood was taken to the medical center by an ambulance on Sept. 13 after police were called to investigate his belligerent behavior at a Greyhound bus station. He was also suffering a personal medical condition, according to the KPD.

Smallwood is unsure of his surroundings, including what city and state he is in, according to KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk. He has a Kentucky address.

The suspect was taken to KPD headquarters for questioning.
