Tornado damage hits Old Tennessee State Prison where ‘Green Mile,’ ‘Walk the Line’ filmed
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A dangerous tornado that roared across Middle Tennessee overnight slammed the Old Tennessee State Prison with loads of damage. The Nashville facility closed 28 years ago, but will forever carry a rich history in show business.
If the abandoned prison looks like something out of a movie – it is. “The Green Mile,” scenes from “Walk the Line” and country stars like Eric Church all filmed there. With its castle-like structure, the prison was considered a filmmaker’s dream until its decay made it too risky for production companies.
A tornado that raged through Nashville overnight left the prison with obvious damage. Video shows Tennessee Department of Corrections crews surrounding the area and working to clean up the rubble.
“The damage is significant here at the Old Tennessee State Prison,” TDOC Commissioner Tony Parker reported. “It was a pretty significant tornado. It did a lot of damage.”
The tornado passed south of Nashville’s active prison facilities. However, TDOC has emergency plans in process and is working to find solutions for employees having difficulties making it to work due to debris.
Intense winds knocked down a 40-yard section of the old prison wall that is a foot and a half thick. A building housing old records was also demolished.
“This building’s been here a long time. I didn’t know what the future of this building would be, but it’s obvious that nature can come in a few seconds and change a landscape,” TDOC Commissioner Tony Parker said. “I’m just thankful no one was hurt here.”
