TN REP GLORIA JOHNSON PROPOSES RADICAL MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE
Tennessee state Rep. Gloria Johnson, a Democrat who gained national fame after surviving a Republican-led expulsion effort for participating in a chaotic disruption on the House floor along with two other Democrat Representatives, has introduced a bill to raise Tennessee’s minimum wage to $20 per hour -which would be the highest in the U.S..
As introduced, the bill increases the hourly minimum wage to $20.00, or the federal minimum wage established pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, whichever rate is greater.
Tennessee is currently one of 20 states that have a minimum wage set at the federal minimum, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Washington currently has the highest minimum wage of any state at $16.28.
Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s Campaign issued the following statement.
“Gloria Johnson is as woke as they come, so it’s no surprise this radical socialist is trying to out-liberal Joe Biden’s minimum wage executive order,” the statement said. “It’s a clear sign she puts the liberal woke agenda and PR stunts before Tennesseans.
Independent non-profit group, Good Jobs Institute, said many businesses have already set their minimum wage at more than double the federal minimum. Most area businesses currently offer $12-$15 minimum wages.
Some economists say a $20/hr. minimum wage could cause consumer prices to skyrocket as retailers would pass the wage increase on to customers.
