NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that would prohibit the sale of refrigerated or cold beer in Tennessee.

SB2636 was introduced Jan. 31 and is sponsored by Sen. Paul Rose (R — District 32) and Rep. Ron Gant (R — District 94).

The bill has passed its first and second considerations and will now head to committee, which is where it will be fully debated and amended as needed. If the bill passes committee, it will head to a final vote.

SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 57, Chapter 5, Part 1, is amended by adding the following as a new section:
Notwithstanding another law to the contrary, a person or entity holding a beer permit issued under this chapter shall not sell refrigerated or cold beer at retail. SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.

The goal of the bill is to curb drunk driving and deadly crashes in which alcohol is involved. Drinking alcohol while behind the wheel is illegal in Tennessee though open container laws allow those traveling in vehicles to imbibe.
