TN HOUSE PASSES ‘RIGHT TO TRY’ UNAPPROVED DRUGS FOR TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS

The Tennessee House of Representatives on Thursday unanimously passed “Right to Try” legislation that would give state residents with incurable diseases access to experimental drugs that are still in the clinical trials process.

The legislation, which is being promoted in state legislatures across the nation by the Goldwater Institute and here by The Beacon Center of Tennessee, now goes to the Senate.

Basically, the law would allow Tennessee doctors to prescribe any drug in U.S. Food and Drug Administration clinical trials that has already undergone phase 1 testing, which checks for safety in healthy volunteers. People with incurable diseases could get the drugs even though the agency hasn’t  determined their effectiveness.
