THREE TODDLERS LEFT UNATTENDED AT VILLAGE INN, ONE PLAYING IN THE STREET
A Crossville Police officer couldn’t believe his eyes as he passed City Hall and noticed a small 2-year-old child playing in the street alone. Here is his account:
On 08/26/2019 at approx 0905am I was traveling on 127 North when I noticed a young child playing in the middle of the street across from City Hall. Upon making contact with the young child he could not tell me his name nor could he tell me where he lived. While talking to the child I was waved down by the Village Inn manager who informed me that the child belonged to the occupants of apartment 283. I then made contact with the occupants, Mr. Dylan Sunderland Kelly and Ms. Jennifer Lynn DeYoung, who informed me that they were the parents. They stated that they had both fallen asleep and were unaware that the child had gotten out. Both Mr. Kelly and Ms. DeYoung stated that this wasn’t the first time that the child had gotten out of the apartment. Upon further investigation I was informed by Ms. DeYoung that they were also supposed to be watching two other children in the apartment beside them, that were inside apartment number 282. Mr. Kelly told me that the children next door, 5 and 3 year-old, had been left alone since their father had gone to work at 0600. Ms. DeYoung informed me that they often let the children sleep until 1000 before they normally go check on them and that they hadn’t checked on them since the father had left for work earlier in the morning. I made contact with Justin Macewen who identified himself as the father of both children. He stated that he normally leaves his children with Mr. Kelly and Ms. DeYoung and that he was unaware that they leave them unattended for the majority of the time that he was at work. While talking to Mr. Kelly I was informed that he had an outstanding warrant for a violation of probation. DCS was contacted. All three children were left in the custody of Justin Macewen. I placed both Mr. Kelly and Ms. DeYoung under arrest and transported them to the Cumberland County Justice Center.
