THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS UNACCOUNTED FOR IN FENTRESS CO SHERIFF’S DEPT.

ScreenHunter_84 Jan. 20 12.21A report shows a “growing number of problems in Fentress County,” especially in the county’s sheriff’s office, according to the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office.

Comptroller Justin P. Wilson says during an annual audit, the State found at least 15 problems spread across several county offices.

One of the main problems, according to the comptroller’s report, thousands of dollars are unaccounted for from the Fentress County Sheriff’s Office.

After a drug arrest a defendant pleaded no contest, forfeiting $2,277 that should have went directly to the county trustee or into a sheriff’s office bank account.

Along with that forfeited money, members of the Fentress County Sheriff’s Office failed to register $12,885 within a three-day period, sometimes waiting as much as 15 months between seizure and getting the money on Fentress County’s books.

The report noted that the trend of unaccounted funds happened while Anthony Choate was sheriff. Sheriff Charles Cravens took office last September.

Other problems listed included misuse of military surplus donated from the U.S. Department of Defense.
