TDOT PONDERS ‘ROUNDABOUT’ FOR HWY 70 & MILLER BY-PASS, HOW IT WORKS
TDOT surveyors were recently spotted at the intersection of Highway 70E and Miller By-pass explaining they were surveying the possibility of a ’roundabout’ intersection there.
The surveyors said right now TDOT is just contemplating a change of the four-way intersection and nothing is in the works for anytime soon. And just in case you’re wondering what a ’roundabout is…”a circular area where three or more roads meet that you have to drive around in one direction in order to get onto another road. The American word is traffic circle or rotary.
Widespread use of the modern roundabout began when the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory engineers re-engineered and standardized circular intersections during the 1960s
Here is how a typical roundabout works:

This is a terrible idea. Just install traffic lights. Cumberland County doesnt have enough courtesy or common sense for this to not be a disaster

It’s why they installed car horns.
They’ll be no more potential for disasters than people running red lights or abusing the Right Turns on Reds.

I come from Central Ohio – where they LOVE their round-a-bouts. At least the “powers that be” do. The public absolutely hates them. They are so dangerous and most people don’t know what to do when they confront one. I dread the thought of them coming here.

Where exactly is 70 east and Miller Bypass …where a round-about would be needed. I just can not picture where this is

70 East and Miller bypass (Peavine) would be the worst location for a traffic circle. They are ideally suited for existing flat area intersections. The state is probably just looking for another location to keep their earth moving contractors busy.
The best location to try a traffic circle in Cumberland County is the existing project planned for the Hwy 127 & 68 junctions in the Homesteads. The area is nearly a traffic circle now. Traffic circles keep traffic flowing which is exactly what’s needed by the Homestead school.
There are already traffic circles in the Knoxville area and they work fine. Once people get used to them, they’ll want more.
Our problem in Cumberland County is that the locals don’t even know how to used traffic lights. Most sit at Left Green lights long after the traffic has cleared and wait for the next Green Arrow only. News Flash! You can turn left on Solid Green after traffic clears.
Stop putting your makeup on and get your head out of your apps.

The people that live there actually the homestead tower association how do I know that back when was still able to work I worked for tdot construction and was on the committee with some of what they were called stakeholdera round about was brought up with visual and aid’s on how it look but no they were not going to change that triangle to a circle. then there was many options brought forward but at last public meeting I attended a older lady and her daughter said they would.chain themselves to a tree in the triangle before they would ever let that triangle be changed one little bit. Then after I left I heard the job was pulled
