SHOOTING SUSPECT ESCAPES FROM EAST TN HOSPITAL JUST BEFORE SURGERY

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – UPDATE 11:26 a.m.- The Greene County Sheriff’s Office has released new details in the escape of a shooting suspect from the Johnson City Medical Center.

According to a release from Sheriff Wesley Holt, the department was alerted at 6:34 a.m. that Mark Hanselman, 55, of Indiana, had left the hospital “sometime overnight.”

The release says Hanselman was at the hospital receiving treatment for a gunshot wound that he suffered after an officer-involved shooting on December 3. He was scheduled for surgery this morning.

Charges are currently pending on Hanselman for aggravated burglary, theft and convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

JCPD and the TBI are investigating the circumstances surrounding his escape from the hospital.

East Tennessee State University issued an alert to shelter in place for students and faculty.
