SEVERAL ACCIDENTS IN PUTNAM CO YESTERDAY INCLUDING ONE FATALITY

A 66-year-old man was killed in a wreck in Baxter last night, and emergency medical personnel were kept busy responding to wrecks all across the county yesterday.

Harvey D. Morgan, of Chestnut Street in Baxter, was killed in a wreck around 7:39 last night at Baxter crossroads.

Morgan was driving a 2003 Chevy pickup truck westbound on Highway 70N and was negotiating through the four-way stop at the intersection with Highway 56, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol reports.

Another vehicle, a 2005 Dodge CW being driven by a juvenile and carrying a juvenile passenger, was traveling northbound on Highway 56.

As the Dodge vehicle approached the four-way stop at the intersection, it failed to stop, continuing through the intersection and colliding with Morgan’s vehicle.

Both the juveniles were injured in the wreck, according to THP reports.

Drinking and drugs do not appear to be factors in the accident, but tests were ordered.

It was noted that Morgan was not wearing a seat belt when the accident happened, but in this specific accident, wearing a seat belt likely would not have had an impact on the outcome, the THP report concludes.

No citations were issued, and no charges are pending at this time.

Trooper Craig Wilkerson investigated the wreck.

In another wreck yesterday, this one on Clarkrange Highway in Monterey, one person had to be extricated from a vehicle and transported to the hospital for medical care.

And a tractor trailer truck caught fire on Interstate 40 yesterday, around mile marker 296, also near Monterey, keeping crews busy and traffic backed up for a brief time.

There were no fatalities in those accidents, and no further details are available.
