SCAMMERS WORKING OVERTIME TO GET YOUR MONEY

scam-alert-pic_0Scamming people out of their money seems to be ramping up in the Crossville area.  The well known IRS scam has appeared again, this time hitting a resident of Plateau Road – says he got a call from someone claiming to be an IRS agent threatening legal action if the victim didn’t send money.  The resident just hung up the phone.  Yet another resident was called from someone saying they were with the U.S. Treasury Department telling him he was going to be in big legal trouble if he didn’t pay his taxes.  That scammer actually left a message on the answering machine with a number to call back but when the number was called – the scammer hung up on him. Then there’s the case of the Cumberland County woman who was emailed asking her to take a nanny job watching an elderly woman and young boy.  The scammer told the victim she was going to send her money – $988 to be exact.  The scammer further explained that the victim needed to send her grandmothers caregiver $910 of that money in Florida.  The victim went to send the money to Florida but discovered she had an overdraft of $910 and the scammers check had been stopped.  As always, if you’re contacted by anyone asking for money, even if they seem to be a Federal agent – hang up.  Neither the IRS nor any other agency operates that way.  Never give anyone your personal information over the phone or by email.
