ROANE STATE FENTRESS CO CAMPUS TO MOVE TO ALVIN C YORK INSTITUTE

JAMESTOWN – Roane State Community College’s Fentress County location will move to the Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute in August.

Roane State’s current location, 632 N. Main St., opened in 2004. School administrators said they expect to complete the move by late August.

“We have worked closely with York Institute for many years as part of our dual enrollment program,” Dr. Diane Ward, Roane State’s vice president for student learning, said in a news release. “Being located on the York campus is a natural fit and will provide a better learning environment for students.”

The York Institute is a public high school founded by World War I hero Alvin C. York in 1926 and then transferred to the state of Tennessee in 1937. York founded it to give students in rural areas the opportunity to go to school. It enrolls more than 650 students in grades 9-12 and is the only school in the United States both financed and operated by the state, according to the York Institute student handbook.

The campus consists of more than 400 acres of land, making it one of the largest high school campuses in the world. The school is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places, though classes are no longer taught in the original building.

Roane State’s space at York Institute will include two classrooms, an office, restrooms, and a student lounge with computers. This is a loss of only two classrooms from the current location. Student services such as financial aid and course registration will be available.

The school said approximately 125 students take classes at Roane State’s Fentress County location each semester.
