PRIVATIZATION OF STATE PARKS PROPOSAL ONLY FOR HOSPITALITY OPERATIONS

Governor Bill Haslam’s push to outsource government jobs is a growing concern across the state and at least two counties are pushing back. Both the Bledsoe and Van Buren County Commissions have passed resolutions opposing the privatization of Fall Creek Falls State Park. More than 70 citizens met Tuesday night to voice their opposition to outsourcing jobs at Fall Creek Falls State Park, which reportedly generates more money than any other park in the state. There has been some misinformation circulating however relating to what exactly the State wants to privatize.  According to State Representative Cameron Sexton (R) Crossville, Gov. Haslam’s proposal would only include outsourcing State Park’s restaurants, inns and golf courses, not the entire Park operation.   The State would retain all the assets and the contracted companies would be required to provide maintenance for the hospitality’s they manage. According to Gov. Haslam, the idea behind the privatization proposal is to contract professional companies who are better suited to manage the restaurants, inns and golf courses.  While some restaurants such as the ones at Fall Creek Falls and Cumberland Mountain State Park tend to break even and perhaps make a profit, many are losing money each year.  Through outsourcing, the State would ultimately be paid a fee each year by the management companies, the Governor says, turning the restaurants, inns and golf courses into profitable ventures instead of costly liabilities.
