A Memphis police officer is in jail for allegedly trying to steal from the Make-a-Wish foundation. Officers say Ronald Harris tried to steal nearly $1,500 worth of gift cards from a volunteer.

Police say the alleged crime took place in the middle of Memphis International Airport (MEM) and now it might have an impact on how Make-a-Wish works across the country.

Harris, 34, has been with the Memphis Police Department for 12 years, but on Sunday he is sitting in jail charged with robbery, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and evading arrest.

It was supposed to be a routine Make-A-Wish trip, as a family gathered at MEM. A volunteer arrived to give the family money for the trip, but all of that was almost ruined.

Police say off-duty officer Harris parked in the airport parking garage, right next to a Make-A-Wish volunteer, who was bringing the family a brown bag with five T-shirts and a $1,500 prepaid Visa card.

Inside the airport, the woman sat down near the family and put the bag on the chair next to her. Harris then allegedly picked up the bag and when the woman claimed it, he gave it back.

But according to police, a few minutes later Harris again snatched the bag and ran. The father of the Make-A-Wish grantee grabbed Harris and took the bag back.

Then a chase began. Harris ran and airport police eventually found him near the Southwest Airlines ticket area. He ran again, this time grabbing the Make-A-Wish volunteer. Yet again, the father intervened and was injured in the process.

Eventually Harris was taken into custody, but only for a moment — he kicked open the squad car door and ran again.

Police arrested him a short time later.

Sunday night Police Director Toney Armstrong released the following statement:

“It is certainly disheartening and I am deeply saddened that an organization as wonderful as Make-A-Wish was victimized by someone sworn to protect, especially a member of the Memphis Police Department. Thankfully, no one sustained serious injuries. This officer is now facing serious charges for his criminal behavior. The Airport Police is to be commended for their quick response and professionalism.”

Make-A-Wish Mid-South released this statement saying in part:

“We are cooperating with the investigation and immediately adjusted our protocols to ensure the safety of our volunteers and wish families…”

Make-A-Wish Mid-South plans to meet with airport officials on Monday.

According to a records search, this appears to be Harris’ first arrest. He has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation and is being held on $25,000 bond.

Harris is due in court Monday morning.
