POLICE: INTOXICATED MAN POSES AS STUDENT AT OAK RIDGE HIGH

4529546_GAn allegedly intoxicated Sunbright man was arrested last week for posing as an Oak Ridge High School student and visiting at least two classrooms.

William Edward Lay, 25, faces charges of criminal impersonation and public intoxication.

According to court documents, an Oak Ridge Police Department officer was investigating a report of a suspicious adult walking around and into classrooms at Oak Ridge High School on August 12.

“He came in and he just asked where the auditorium was and, so, he looked old and you told me he was 25, but he told everyone he was 17. I saw he had tattoos and he said he was from France,” said freshman Katie Roach.

Principal David Bryant says Lay even faked a French accent, and it didn’t take long for people to catch on. Bryant says Lay got to school around 7 a.m. and used a freshman’s name to get a class schedule.

The officer came into conduct with the man, identified as Lay, on the second floor during a class change. He had apparently gotten a student’s classroom scheduled and was attempting to pass himself off as a student.

Lay had no identification and gave the officer an incorrect date of birth and social security number along with other false information.

The officer noted that Lay was unsteady on his feet and fell onto the wall on several occasions. His eyes were also red and glassy looking. He also failed a field sobriety test.

Lay told the officer he was under the influence of the medication Adderall.

He was placed under arrest and taken to the Anderson County Jail. He was released on bond the following day.

Officers say Lay is wanted for theft in Morgan County.

As an extra security measure beginning next week, the school is going to make it mandatory for students and staff to use school IDs to get into the main entrances at school. They say the measure has been in the works for awhile, but this latest incident proves how important the IDs are
