POLICE FINALLY TALK DOWN MAN UP IN TREE WHO SAID HE HAD BEEN SHOT

Things got a little strange out on Peterbilt Lane in Crossville.  That’s just past Vegas Steakhouse on 127 North. Police were called out when a man was spotted up in a tree.  The man in question, 37-year-old Dewayne Scott Mathis of Spring City, told police that people were chasing him and he had been jumping from tree to tree for five hours trying to get away.  After about two hours of talking, police were able to get Mathis to come down out of the tree.  Mathis had told police he had been shot but there was no evidence of a wound. Mathis was check out by EMS who found no injuries.  Turns out Mr. Mathis was wanted by several law agencies including a warrant from Rhea County for rape, statutory rape and criminal indictment.  Arkansas also had a warrant for Mathis but didn’t want to extradite him. He also was wanted in Cumberland County for failure to appear.  He was taken into custody and jailed at the Justice Center.
