ONLINE PETITION ASKS BOARD OF EDUCATION TO RECONSIDER ‘ADDING HOUR TO SCHOOL DAYS’

An online petition has been posted on Facebook asking the Cumberland County Board of Education to reconsider its decision to add one hour to school days following Spring Break.  The Board found itself needing to make up two school days resulting from the snow and ice storms of February.  The board looked at several options; extending the school year by two days, removing two days from Spring Break, possibly going on Saturdays, or adding an hour to 13 school days after Spring Break.   Ultimately the Board passed the motion to add the extra hour.  That move has several parents in an uproar.  The petition cites the following:   “A college level student or adult doesn’t even attend classes for 11 or 12 hours a day simply because the brain fatigues and cannot process information after a certain point so thinking this will help with extra study time for the testing coming up is just outrageous! Behavior issues during school and on the bus will dramatically increase, after school activities and sports will be affected, and some of the high school students have jobs to support their families/ local businesses which will cause them to lose actual money that some simply cannot afford to lose”.

There’s no word yet on whether a petition of this nature will be considered by the Board of Education in rescinding a vote. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PETITION
