The Algood city council could vote soon to ban cell phone use by drivers in school zones, if the Tennessee Attorney General gives the okay.  Councilwoman Jennifer Green proposed the idea to protect children and others in school zones.  “They need to be more aware of their surroundings and what’s going on around them,” said Green. “We are starting this idea for safety for our children at school.”

The proposed ordinance would prohibit the use of wireless telephones in the defined school zone between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The fine for the violation would be $50.00 per offense.

City officials are waiting for an opinion from the Attorney General to make sure the ordinance doesn’t conflict with any state laws.

The Algood Police Department sent News 2 the following statement regarding the proposal:

“Distracted driving is always a concern for law enforcement and we would encourage all drivers to focus on their main responsibility while behind the wheel, safe driving. The safety of children is always a top priority for the Algood Police Department. We support efforts to make the community safe. Legislative decisions are best left for the council and we will ultimately support their decision.”  (WKRN-TV)
