One of the laws is named after two Morristown boys who were killed in 2012 after being electrocuted while swimming in a marina. The “Noah Dean and Nate Act” that starts January 1st calls for annual inspections of electrical equipment at marinas and other safeguards to avoid other people from facing electric shock.

A law that was pushed by former State Sen. Stacey Campfield called the “Parental Involvement to End Poverty Act.” This law requires parents that receive welfare to attend parent teacher conferences for their kids and attend an eight-hour parenting class. This bill was under fire by critics who argue the law unfairly punishes low-income families.

There is also a new law dealing with employee privacy called the “Employee Online Privacy Act of 2014. This law prevents an employer from requiring an employee to share the username and password for that employee’s personal Internet account with some exceptions.

There’s a law dealing with criminal procedure also taking effect Thursday. The law allows a court to grant a certificate of employability after someone is convicted of a crime. It also gives certain immunity to employers who hire people with that certificate.
