NEW SCAM INVOLVING TENNESSEE CAREER CENTERS, STATEWIDE INVESTIGATION
There’s a new scam out this week involving the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce.
Donnie Black in Knoxville went through his local Career Center looking for a job. He found one – but it turned out to be a scam. Black thought it was legitimate because it was through the Department of Labor. A Georgia based construction company, NSC, had posted a job opening that paid $16.50 an hour. Black quit another job to take the job with NSC. Black was contacted by the man who hired him, Gary Cates, who told Black he needed to send them a training fee of $71.35 and it had to be paid with a Green Dot debit card. Black did not buy the card. The Tennessee Career Center says they’re a victim too. Ray Abbas says this has never happened before. He says they’re working with the victims to help find them other jobs, and he warns people to be cautious if an employer asks you to send them money for any reason.
The job posting has been taken down, and they’re now launching a statewide investigation.
Victims of this scam are asked to make an online report with the FBI.
