MYSTERIOUS POLIO-LIKE VIRUS PARALYZING KIDS ACROSS THE U.S., INCLUDING EAST TN (HOW TO SPOT AFM)
A Chattanooga boy has been diagnosed with a mysterious paralyzing condition that appears to be rising among kids across the country. WRCB reports that 6-year-old Spencer Hill was diagnosed last month with Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) which seems to be linked to a virus similar to Polio. More than 90 percent of AFM cases have involved children 18 or younger, with an average age of just 4 years old. The disease starts out like the common cold, however, children infected with AFM soon have trouble moving their arms and legs. Early diagnosis is vital in recovering from this potentially fatal virus. The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed 62 cases in 22 states. WRCB reports that Spencer received intense steroid infusions to help stop the spread of paralysis. He has spent the last three weeks working on his fine motor skills. He still has very little movement in his fingers, but intense therapy is helping. Doctors are hopeful that Spencer will make a full recovery.
