The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has released more information in the deadly Vandever Road shooting March 12.  According to the report, John Patrick Fields attempted to run over several people in a yard at 2593 Vandever Road with a Chevy truck before he started shooting. Several people took shelter inside the residence and that’s when  Fields jumped out of his truck, ran inside after the victims and fired several more shots.  23-year-old Makayla Manning was killed and two others were wounded. While inside the home, Fields allegedly pointed a firearm at a womans head and threatened to kill both her and a three-week old baby she was holding (Makayla and Joseph Manning’s son) if she told anyone. The weapon was described as a black and silver .22 magnum bolt action rifle with a scope and a sling.  At some point, a call was made to 911 and the victims began exiting the house once officers arrived. Fields also exited the home and a male victim (Joseph Manning) with a gunshot wound pointed to Fields as his attacker. Officers secured the scene and transported Fields to the Justice Center for questioning. Authorities say Fields was advised of his Miranda Rights before he confessed to the shootings. John Patrick Fields has been charged with two counts of first degree murder in the deaths of Makayla Manning and Lowell Thomas ‘Chip” Simmons, whose body was found about four miles from the residence just off Critter Creek Road. Fields is also charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder of Joseph Manning and the other woman at the Vandever Road location identified as Eleashea Alene Curry.
