MAN SCREAMS AT ALGOOD TN POLICE, “KILL ME, KILL ME” WIELDING TWO KNIVES

PRESS RELEASE:
ALGOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT
This morning at approximately 5:30 am, Officers Matthew Tyree and Kyle Meyer were stationary observing traffic on Main Street in Algood. An identified young man entered the parking lot driving a silver Pontiac. He jumped out and was seen bleeding from multiply self-inflicted lacerations on his arms. He was carrying 2 large knives.
He charged at the officers insisting that they “kill” him. Officers Tyree and Meyer were able to contain the individual by encircling him with their cars disorienting him. As officers exited their vehicle to deal with this suicidal man, he charged Officer Tyree.
Officer Tyree was able to maneuver away from him and avoid the two knives. Officers attempted to negotiate with the individual and were able to keep their distance from the armed suicidal man. Assistance arrived from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and EMS.
Negotiations failed to produce a surrender and the individual was tased one time. This caused the knives to be dislodged and the individual fell to the ground. He was cuffed. During the cuffing, he repeatedly requested officers to kill him. He also made the statement that he was heading into the Rodgers Group to run his vehicle into the Quarry.
Officers Tyree and Meyer interrupted those plans, and he changed his tactics to suicide by cop. Thankfully, he was unsuccessful and has been transported via EMS to Cookeville Regional Hospital.
Algood Police Department wants to commend Officers Tyree and Meyer for their restraint and their ability to contain an emotionally unstable subject without further need of force.
Hopefully, this will allow the individual and his family to seek the assistance he needs.
