MAN RUNNING FROM THP CRASHES ON I-40 IN MONTEREY- KILLED

PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A man died Tuesday afternoon in a crash while fleeing a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper on Interstate 40 East.

It happened at 3:50 p.m. near mile marker 295 between Cookeville and Monterey.

Authorities with THP said a trooper pulled the man over and was running his information when he fled.

The suspect reportedly got up to speeds of 110 miles per hour before slamming into the back of a tractor trailer.

He died on the scene. His identity wasn’t immediately released.

Further details were not immediately known.

Only one lane of I-40 East remains open to traffic. The rest of the road isn’t expected to be cleared until at least 10 p.m.  (WKRN)

 

 

Interstate 40 East in Putnam County is partially blocked due to a fatal crash involving multiple vehicles.

The crash was first reported at mile marker 295 just before 4 p.m. The roadway is not expected to be cleared until at least 10 p.m.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said preliminary information indicated that a trooper stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on I-40. The driver suddenly accelerated away from the traffic stop and began evading the trooper.

The fleeing driver then crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer and was killed.

Westbound traffic is not affected. THP’s Criminal Investigation Division and Critical Response Team are on the scene.

The trooper was not injured in the crash. It is unclear if any other injuries were reported.  (WSMV)
