LIGHTNING STRIKE BLOWS UP ROAD IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

In the stranger than fiction department, Cumberland County road crews were called out this afternoon to a hole in a road.  During the storms that passed through the area today,  a lightning bolt struck the pavement and blew a hole in it.  Very unusual for lighting to strike the pavement.  Lightning usually seeks the path of least resistance to get into the ground (Actually cloud to ground lightning starts at the ground. A build up of positive charge builds up on the ground beneath the cloud, attracted to the negative charge in the bottom of the cloud. The ground’s positive charge concentrates around anything that sticks up usually – trees, lightning conductors, even people! The positive charge from the ground connects with the negative charge from the clouds and a spark of lightning strikes.)  The post from the Road Department doesn’t mention where the road is located but road crews were on hand making repairs this afternoon.
