LAST REMAINING ORIGINAL MEMBER OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT PASSES AT 94

One of the original members of the  Cumberland County Fire Department has passed.  94-year-old Bob Austin passed away Wednesday, October 5th.  Below is a tribute to Mr. Austin written for his 90th birthday:

Dad, brother, granpa, great grandpa and uncle Bob was born June 22, 1928 in New Castle, Indiana and his parents were Oscar and Tressie (Upchurch) Austin. He is one of 10 children. The family moved to Kentucky then to Allardt, TN. Bob has 7 children, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews all of which are dear to his heart. Bob is of Christian Faith and a member of Central Baptist Church, he served in the United States Army and was a Master Sergeant from 1946 to 1952. Bob was a fireman in Dayton, Ohio and helped start the Cumberland County Fire Department. (1974 – Bob was one of three firemen to be hired once the  Cumberland  County  Fire  Department was created.  Jim  Isham  was  the  Chief  and  Bob  Austin  along  with  Roy  Hall  were  assistant  Fire  Chief’s)

He retired from the State of Tennessee as a welder after working 21 years. He remains on the Cumberland County Election Commission for 25+ years. He was on the Cumberland Utility Board (Pleasant Hill division) for 20+ years. His favorite sports are baseball and golf. He has a few sayings that you might have heard “I’m dry and above ground”, “The Politicians can’t control the weather”, “I love you more and longer” and he’s always holding on forty (40) for his birthday. And by no means can we forget his Blue Subaru car. That car has over 300,000 miles on it and makes every noise that a car can make but dad always says as its okay just drive it, it will get you there and back.

Funeral Services For Robert “Bob” Austin, Age 94, Of The Pleasant Hill Community, Will Be Conducted On Friday, October 7, 2022, At 3:30 PM From The Chapel Of Goff Funeral Home. Pastor Roland Smith Will Officiate With Interment To Follow In The New Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Mr. Austin Was Born On Friday, June 22, 1928, In New Castle, Indiana, To The Late Oscar W. And Tressie Upchurch Austin. Mr. Austin Passed Away On Wednesday, October 5, 2022, At the Life Care Center Of Crossville.  A Member Of Crossville Masonic Lodge #483, And A Member Of Central Baptist Church. He Is Survived By, 2 Daughters And Sons-In-Law, Debbie And Rick Nail Of Crossville, TN, Ashlara And James Gibby Of South Carolina; 4 Sons And 3 Daughters-In-Law, David And Diane Austin Of Crossville, TN, Mike Austin Of Crossville, TN, Allen And Darlene Austin Of Crossville, TN, Danny And Mary Austin Of Sparta, TN; 14 Grandchildren; 16 Great Grandchildren; 2 Sisters And A Brother-In-Law, Linda And Terry Bogard Of Cookeville, TN, Mary Wuest Of Florida; And A Host Of Nieces And Nephews. In Addition To His Parents, He Was Preceded In Death By His Wives, Lavena Phillips Austin And Zdenka Lockwood Austin; Several Brothers And Sisters; And Daughter-In-Law, Wilma Austin.
