Megan LaRue was in stable condition, a family member said, facing surgery to remove part of the tree from her leg.

She had to be cut free of the white Kia with tools, according to fire authorities on scene.

Her 12-week-old son Pierson also was in the car and was uninjured, according to Rural/Metro Fire Capt. William Kear. The boy was being cared for by family and a pediatrician who is a family friend, according to the family.

The tree fell about 5:15 p.m. onto the car parked in a driveway by a house at 7926 Bell Road. A branch pierced the windshield, striking LaRue.

The house sits at the end of a long driveway.

LaRue, who is a tenant at the home, was able to call for help and communicate with emergency dispatchers.

Rural/Metro and the Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad reported to the scene.

The child’s father was in Kansas on Monday and was heading back to East Tennessee after being advised of the incident.

Downed trees could be seen across the property. A fast-moving storm swept through the area between 5 and 6 p.m., knocking down numerous trees.
