INMATE SUES MORGAN CO SHERIFF, OTHERS FOR $10MIL; CLAIMS PARALYSIS

A Morgan County inmate has sued the Sheriff and others at the jail claiming their negligence has caused him to become a paraplegic.  32-year-old James Travis Adkins was jailed back in April for violating his probation.  Adkins complained of back pain in June and was eventually transported to a hospital in July.  There he was prescribed Motrin and an ice pack for a pulled muscle.  Adkins claims the pain worsened in time and he tried to get medical help but the jail personnel ignored his pleas.  Adkins was eventually sent back to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a spinal infection that led to surgery.  He now suffers paralysis and cannot walk.  The suit claims doctors have told the inmate he will never walk again or have bladder control. The Jail Administrator says Adkins told hospital staff he injected himself with a  drug into his neck with a dirty needle while in jail. The Administrator went on to say that Adkins was not ignored by jail personnel.
