The Knoxville Police department says two children and one adult have been killed in a crash involving two school buses on Asheville Highway at John Sevier Highway.

Knox County Schools says the buses were number 44, serving Chilhowee Intermediate School, and number 57, serving Sunnyview Primary School. Bus 44 suffered front end damage; bus 57 flipped on the side.

Nineteen children were transported to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital; hospital staff report none of the children transported there are suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Knoxville Police Department Chief Rausch says most of the children transported to Children’s were on the Sunnyview bus. Rausch says many parents opted to take children by private vehicle.

UT Medical Center reports they are treating three patients but has not released whether those patients are children or adults.

Knox County Schools reports administrators will contact parents with information from law enforcement.

All lanes of westbound Asheville Highway are blocked; the Knoxville Police department says those lanes will remain blocked for several hours as the investigation continues.

Knoxville Police say they have established a waiting area at the Riverview Crossing area.

At this point, we have three fatalities, one adult, two children. (WVLT)
