Former University of Tennessee President Dr. Edward J. Boling died Thursday at the age of 93.

Boling was president from 1970 to 1988, the longest recent term of service in office. He was previously UT’s vice president of development for nine years.

“He oversaw the birth of a modern, high-quality land-grant institution linked to national labs with excellence at every level. We are all grateful for his service,” said current UT President Joe DiPietro.

Dr. Boling graduated from UT and was hired by UT President Andy Holt in 1961, succeeding him as the university’s 17th president. Boling became president emeritus when he retired in 1988, remaining active in building relationships with donors and prospects. He also frequently attended UT basketball and football games.

Dr. Boling was instrumental in providing support and growing women’s athletics at UT. Thompson-Boling Arena is named after him.

“He had a vision that women could succeed on the playing field just like he had a vision they could succeed in the classroom, and he gave them the opportunity to do so,” said Lady Vols basketball coach Holly Warlick.

Boling is survived by his wife Carolyn; three sons Mark, Brian and Stephen; and six grandchildren.
