FORMER TEACHER, PRINCIPAL, COACH, SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, CITY MANGER PASSES

10808266_855491244490882_1104966428_nFormer Cumberland County educator and public servant Thomas ‘Ed’ Potts passed away this week. After serving in the Marine Corps during WWII, Mr. Potts went on to receive his B.A. and M.A. in education from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (now Tennessee Tech). Mr. Potts taught from 1950 to 1965, served as Assistant Principal at CCHS for two years before becoming CCHS Principal from 1967 to 1970.  He coached girls’ basketball and football along side his brother-in-law, L.A. Fox Sr.  After retiring from the school system, Mr. Potts became an Educational Specialist for the Tennessee Department of Education-Division of Veterans Education.   In 1983 Ed Potts took the position of Crossville City Manager until 1985 and in 1988 he was elected Cumberland County Superintendent of Schools for a four year term.  In addition, Mr. Potts was a farmer, grocery store owner and a golf club manager.  Thomas ‘Ed’ Potts is survived by his bride of 66 years, Hellon Potts, who also taught in the County School system for 30 years, as well as their daughter Debi Potts Martin, who is carrying on the family tradition of a long education career in Mt. Juliet. Funeral services for Mr. Potts will be at 1 PM Fri. Nov. 21 at Bilbrey Funeral Home with burial in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends from 11 AM-1 PM Fri. prior to the service.  Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association of Tennessee. Thomas ‘Ed’ Potts was 89.
