FORMER POLICE CHIEF SHOAP SUES CITY OF CROSSVILLE

Former interim Police Chief Rod Shoap has filed a law suit against the City of Crossville in Middle Tennessee District Court.  The suit stems from treatment of Shoap while he was serving as interim Police Chief.  Shoap was hired after Police Chief Dave Beaty took a retirement buy-out and left the position.  During Shoaps term, he expressed to the City his desire to become full time Police Chief several times.  However, his pleas fell on deaf ears at City Hall.  Shoap felt it was because City Council Member Jesse Kerley had a different agenda in mind and was advising interim City manager Steve Hill to not hire Shoap. Shoap resigned earlier this year based on what he saw as constant political strife within the City Government.   Shoap filed a complaint  with the EEOC seeking permission to sue the City.  He received a letter from the EEOC authorizing him to file the suit.  Mr. Shoap tells CNF that he names interim City Manager Steve Hill and former City Council Member Jesse Kerley in the law suit and charges the City, among other allegations,  with discrimination along with defamation of character.  He is asking for a minimum of $200,000 in punitive damages.
