FIREFIGHTERS AND OFF DUTY NURSE BREAK WINDOW OF SUV TO SAVE INFANT LOCKED IN HOT CAR

A five-week old baby that had been locked inside a hot SUV was rescued by Middle Tennessee firefighters and an off-duty nurse earlier this month. The infant’s mother is facing DUI and child neglect charges.

The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department says a call came in from a concerned citizen at a Kroger parking lot on June 13.

That day, the outside temperature in Murfreesboro was 97 degrees with a heat index of 108.

Firefighters arrived and found a parked SUV with its engine turned off. Crews were able to break the windows to get to an infant strapped in a car seat. Firefighters said the baby was underneath blankets, sweating and barely breathing. Authorities believe the child had been locked inside the vehicle for about 20 minutes.

The baby was immediately placed in a police vehicle with cool air conditioning as crews provided medical care. That’s when an off-duty NICU nurse approached and offered to help.
