FATAL TRUCK ACCIDENT CLOSED HIGHWAY 68 ALL DAY FRIDAY

truck-wreck_14882The Tennessee Highway patrol has identified the driver of a tractor trailer truck involved in a fatal single-vehicle crash Friday morning along Highway 68, just over the Cumberland County line in Rhea County.

The driver was 70 year old Vern Delane Hunter of Claxton, Ga., according to THP spokeswoman Dalya Qualls.

Mr. Hunter was driving north up Grandview Mountain on Highway 68 just before 7 Friday morning when he lost control of his truck and went off the right side of the road.  The truck crossed back across the highway and ran off the road,  jumped a  guardrail and overturned into the woods about 50 feet from the highway.

THP says Mr. Hunter was thrown from the truck and killed instantly.  Investigators say Mr.Hunter was not wearing a seatbelt, but if he had, he likely could have survived the wreck.

Highway 68 was closed for most part of the day Friday while crews worked to recover the overturned truck which was carrying ball bearings.
