ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOOTBALL GONE, BOE VOTES IN A TWO-TEAM PROGRAM

Cumberland County Board of Education has approved a two-team elementary football program.  In a 5-3 vote, the Board, upon the recommendation of County-wide Athletic Director Travis Isaacson.  Under the program, two teams will be formed using students from area elementary schools zoned for CCHS and SMHS.  These ‘feeder schools’ teams will play each other and adjacent county teams. According to Isaacson, participation in elementary-level football has been on the decline and that has resulted in some elementary schools not having enough students to make up a functional team.  Several board members chimed in the fact that the two-team approach was more safety conscious because it would create more evenly matched teams and would not pit larger kids against smaller children. No name for the two teams has been decided on yet.  Jr. Jets and Jr. Panthers is already taken by the 6 grade and under teams.  We talked to Mr. Isaacson and he stressed the safety of the younger students was dominant in the decision along with elementary football participation dwindling.
