DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS COULD BE ELECTED INSTEAD OF APPOINTED IF LAW PASSES

Tennessee lawmakers are pushing a bill that would allow school superintendents to be elected instead of appointed.

The current law authorizes school boards to appoint directors of schools. This bill would give a county or city that runs a school system the option to choose to have an elected superintendent. To do that, a majority of the county commission or city council members would have to vote in favor of creating that elected position.

The bill’s co-sponsor, Representative Ed Butler, told FOX 17 News once an election is held, voters would decide who the superintendent is.
