Dead people, prisoners and state employees are continuing to get unemployment benefits in Tennessee, in spite of repeated warnings that the state is improperly paying out tens of millions in jobless claims.

Those were among the findings in an audit released Tuesday by the state comptroller’s office that said the unemployment benefit system made overpayments of $98 million in the last six years.

The audit, which looked at state programs receiving federal money, took aim at the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development for continuing to have major problems in spite of repeated findings in 2012 and 2013.

The audit noted that labor officials disagreed with several findings, including the estimated amount of overpayments.

The audit also said people faced long delays in getting help on the phone.
