CUMBERLAND COUNTY LEFT OUT OF GRANT MONEY TO IMPROVE INTERNET SPEED, HERE’S WHY
Many Cumberland Countians are wondering why none of the recent internet broadband grants announced by Governor Lee went to Cumberland County. The closest counties to get part of the more than fourteen million dollars were Putnam, Rhea, Jackson, McMinn and Monroe Counties. According to Cumberland County Mayor Allen Foster, it’s because the FCC maps used to show grant eligible areas are extremely flawed here in Cumberland County. Mayor Foster said “Most areas in our county are reported as having broadband service of at least 10Mbps, which we know is not true. That is why I’m conducting the Broadband Survey. Please be sure to take the survey and share it with others”. Mayor Foster wants to get a more current view of which areas are being under served by internet providers in order to try to get grants for those providers to update their systems.
