On 09-19-2024 a city officer responded to Miller Mart on Miller Avenue for a hit and run accident.
Upon arrival the officer made contact with the victim and two witnesses. Both witnesses stated that they observed the victim in the left travel lane on Miller Avenue facing South. They stated that they observed a Champagne colored Chevy Malibu exit the parking lot and collide with the side of the victim’s vehicle and then flee the scene.
The officer was unable to locate the vehicle or the driver of the vehicle at this point in time.
On 09-20-2024 an anonymous tip was received that the vehicle had pulled into the parking lot of Taylor Street Apartments and had been covered with a car tarp. Officers went to Taylor Street Apartments and were able to make contact with the girlfriend of the male involved. They stated that the girlfriend had admitted that her boyfriend by the name of Nicholas Brown DOB: 01-11-2004 had been involved in a hit and run accident earlier in the week. They were able to make contact with Mr. Brown due to the girlfriend calling him. They stated that Mr. Brown admitted to being in a hit and run accident and they were able to gain consent to remove the car tarp and look at the vehicle. The vehicle was a Champagne colored Chevy Malibu and had heavy front-end damage, matching the stories given by the two witnesses on scene the day of the accident.
On 09-21-2024 Mr. Brown called into dispatch and admitted once more that he was involved in a hit and run accident on Miller Avenue and wanted to speak with an officer.
On 09-23-2024 an officer was able to make contact with Mr. Brown at Taylor Street Apartments. While speaking with Mr. Brown, the officer read him his Miranda Rights, to which he stated he understood, but did not want to answer the officer’s questions. The officer then began to explain that he was under arrest due to the multiple admissions of being involved in a hit and run accident, his girlfriend admitting he was in a hit and run accident, and he and his vehicle matching the exact description given by multiple witnesses. Mr. Brown then began to state that he was involved in a hit and run, but he had hit his brother’s truck. He then went to go get his brother, to which his brother never came to the door.
The officer then began to explain to Mr. Brown that he did not believe his story and that he would be arrested, at which point Mr. Brown became agitated and uttered that he was in the accident that the officer had mentioned, and that the car came out of nowhere and he never saw it. He stated that he stopped for a brief moment, he got scared and left. He also uttered that his friends had told him to lie and try to get away with it. Due to Mr. Brown’s admission and all the substantiating evidence, the officer wrote and issued him two misdemeanor citations for, Leaving the Scene of An Accident and Immediate Notice of An Accident, in lieu of arrest. While on scene, the officer was able to gain consent to again observe the vehicle where he observed heavy front-end damage and heavy damage to the front passenger fender.
