CROSSVILLE MAN DISCOVERED IN STORAGE UNIT PARKING LOT FLEES IN VEHICLE THEN ON FOOT CLAIMING TO BE THERE ONLY TO GET HIGH WHEN CAUGHT WITH BURGLARY TOOLS
On 08/27/2024 a Deputy Sheriff was patrolling A1 storage on Dunbar Road and as he was pulling into the gate the Deputy observed a silver SUV make a U-turn and speed towards the back of the parking lot. He caught up to the vehicle and a male jumped out of the driver seat and began to flee on foot through the woods. When the Deputy caught up to him, he fell to the ground and immediately put both his arms under his body towards his waistline. Fearing what the man may have in his waistline the Deputy then struck the male with two empty hard hand strikes to the head area and on the second strike he heard the male say he gives up. The Deputy then placed him into handcuffs, and he was identified as Donnie Rector Jr.
The Deputy asked him why he ran, and he stated that he ran because he didn’t have a driver’s license. Mr. Rector was advised of his rights and was asked why he was parked inside of one of the storage units and he stated that he was just sitting in the parking lot to get high. The Deputy asked Mr. Rector if he had any more narcotics inside of his vehicle and he stated no just maybe some paraphernalia. The Deputy observed a burnt piece of foil in the driver door and another Deputy conducted a probable cause search on the vehicle.
While searching the vehicle the Depuy located several different burglary tools inside the vehicle along with a black toboggin that had eye holes cut out of it laying in the driver’s floorboard. The first Deputy ran the plate on the vehicle which came back to a 2004 Kia but the vehicle was a silver GMC. The Deputy also observed that someone had altered the sticker on the tag by taking a sharpie and writing a different date on the tag.
An investigator was notified and responded to the scene and collected several items such as a large crowbar, a Milwaukie batterie cutting grinder, hand saw, and other items that could be used to break into a storage unit.
Mr. Rector was then transported to the Cumberland County Justice Center where they served him with an evading arrest warrant and altering a vehicle tag warrant. The investigator attempted to interview Mr. Rector; however, during the interview Mr. Rector requested a lawyer.
