CRAB ORCHARD SCHOOL HONORS BELOVED BUS DRIVER

Crab Orchard Elementary School faculty and students wore red ribbons today to pay respect and honor to Sylvia Lewis. On the ribbons the words “Sylvia” on one side and “Our Hero” on the other. Sylvia was carrying students on her bus on the way to Crab Orchard School last Tuesday when she suffered a massive stroke.  Sylvia, who has driven a bus for the County school system for many years, was able to get her bus to the side of the road and stopped, call dispatch and then calmed the kids on the bus telling them to not worry about her before losing consciousness.   The School Resource Officer, Deputy Fitzgerald was patrolling the same route and came upon the stopped bus.  He boarded the school bus and radioed for emergency help.  Sylvia was airlifted to U.T. Medical Center where doctors were unable to perform any type of life saving procedure because of the massive brain bleed.  Sylvia passed away at her home Easter Sunday. The Homestead community may also wear red ribbons in honor of Sylvia the next couple of days.  Family and friends will accept visitors Thursday from 4 till 8pm at Bilbrey Funeral Home.  Her funeral will be Friday at 10am at Bilbrey’s with a mule driven carriage taking her to her final resting place in Crossville City Cemetery afterwards.  Sylvia was integral in any event at The Homesteads most of her life.  She loved her horses and was a cowgirl in the truest sense of the word.  She was full of energy and always greeted everyone with a beautiful, broad smile.
