COATS BEING LEFT ON POLES FOR HOMELESS IN HARRIMAN

(WVLT) A group of people are traveling the streets of Roane County to hang coats in public places for the needy and less fortunate.

On any given day on the streets of Harriman, Rockwood, Oliver Springs, or Kingston, Dwayne Linger and his entourage of volunteers can be seen driving around town looking to play one of the oddest games of dress up you’ve likely ever seen.

Only theirs isn’t a game at all.

“I’ve got 40 to get out in the next two weeks. We put out 11 of them last weekend, and nine of the 11 is gone,” Linger said.

Linger is talking about the coats he and the other volunteers are hanging around the busiest parts of town on telephone poles for the local homeless community. But they are leaving behind more than just coats for the less fortunate. Each one comes with a pair of gloves, a hat, a blanket, socks, and a Bible.

“That way they get The Word with it also,” Linger said. “I know people walk the streets and a lot of them are in need. And this is one of the reasons we put them out on the main strip.”

And it doesn’t take long for the coats to be taken by someone. Less than an hour after one is put up it’s taken, which Linger said is typical. That’s why Linger spends so much of his time in his car cruising the streets to make sure the coats are constantly being put out so more people can keep warm.

Linger calls this his mission from God, one that he gave up his career as a restaurant owner for, and one he realizes may be a small step, but a step in the right direction to help.

“In Roane County, there’s no place for the homeless to begin with…They either have to do to Knoxville or Crossville,” he said.

Linger said is always looking for donations and support. His ministry, called M-14 Ministries, is located at the Courts of Praise Church in Harriman, TN. VIDEO REPORT ON WVLT HERE
