CIVILIAN RECEIVES FRAUDULENT CALL FROM MAN CLAIMING TO BE CUMBERLAND COUNTY CAPTAIN FROM SHERIFF’S OFFICE
On 07/31/2024 a Deputy Sheriff was dispatched to the front lobby at the sheriff’s office in reference to a fraud report. Upon arrival he made contact with a man who informed the Deputy that he had been contacted earlier in the day by a “Clavion Moring” who stated that he worked at the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and was a Captain. Mr. Moring told the man that he was under investigation for money laundering, drug trafficking, and several other alleged crimes. He also told the man that he had only a few days to “work it out” and would be in contact shortly in reference to these supposed crimes providing a case number and badge number.
The man then attempted to contact the Sheriff’s Office to ask more questions and after being told over the phone that Capt. Moring was not a real person, he went up to the Sheriff’s Office and filed a report. He also provided notes that he took while on the phone with “Capt. Moring”.
If you receive any call from a person claiming to be Captain Moring from the Sheriff’s office be advised this is a fraudulent call and there is no such individual at the Sheriff’s Office.
